Vitamin C is an essential nutrient that cannot be created by your body. The only sources are from food or through supplements.

Functions of Vitamin C:

Vitamin C is an important antioxidant. Antioxidants protect cells from damage caused by free radicals. These are unstable molecules that can lead to oxidative stress and inflammation which contribute to chronic diseases like cancer, heart disease, dementia, arthritis and aging.

  • Tissue regeneration and healing: Vitamin C is necessary for the synthesis of collagen, a protein that is a major component of connective tissues, skin, blood vessels, and bones. This helps the health of cartilage, blood vessels, bones and teeth. Collagen provides structural support and helps heal wounds. Collagen is what keeps skin youthful and firm.

  • Skin aging: A study of 4024 women between the ages of 40-74 showed less wrinkles and dry skin, and better skin aging in those that took Vitamin C. Vit C supports the formation and strength of collagen, vital for skin firmness.

  • Immune System Support: Vitamin C is linked to a strengthened immune system. It promotes the production and function of white blood cells, which are essential for fighting infections and illnesses. Vitamin C is well known as the ‘go-to ‘ supplement when coming down with a cold or flu, for good reason. Studies show that Vitamin C supplementation can prevent complications like pneumonia. Other studies show benefit in reducing cancer risk. Over the decades, high dose Vitamin C intravenously has been used to treat certain forms of cancer with success.

  • Iron Absorption: Vitamin C enhances the absorption of iron. Taking vitamin C with your iron supplement ensures that your body absorbs the iron well to prevent and treat iron deficiency anemia.

  • Brain function and nervous system health: In 2018, a study showed that high levels of vitamin C led to increased mood in male university students. Vitamin C is important in the maturation of nerves within your nervous system (neurons) and in maintaining the myelin sheaths. This allows the transmission of nerve impulses. Vitamin C is shown to improve cognitive function by protecting the brain cells from being damaged by oxidative stress. More recently, it has been shown that even when body stores of Vitamin C are depleting, the brain protects its stores.

Vitamin C is involved in the production of neurotransmitters 9(brain chemistry) for mood and memory eg. norepinephrine and dopamine.

When to take Vitamin C: daily.

Even eating vegetables and fruit will not give you enough Vitamin C that is needed in today’s toxic world. The free radicals resulting from exposure to chemicals and toxins lead to increased demand for all anti-oxidants.

Dose: ‘To bowel tolerance’.

As much as many resources give you a dose of 500-2000mg a day, we recommend taking to bowel tolerance.

What this means is you gradually increase the dose, and when your bowel movements get soft/ watery-your dose is 1 capsule lower.

Why? Because each person has different levels of needs. Your body will tell you how much you need.

It is water soluble, so there is no danger of overdosing on Vitamin C.

Side effects of taking more than your body needs are nausea and diarrhea.
