Traditional Medicine vs Functional Medicine

Traditional medicine (allopathic medicine) emerged after the Industrial revolution in the 18th century. Since then, massive leaps have been made with the discovery of life saving surgeries, antibiotics, vaccines and medicines to extend the life of the population. What is evident is that any approach to health cannot assume that everyone is the same.

We expect to give the same dose of medicine to everyone for a certain condition without questioning the approach. We give the same dose of blood pressure pill, pain killer, and antibiotic to each patient. The Functional medicine paradigm fits for all of you who seek to be understood as an individual. You know that the right medical approach for you needs to be personalized, predictive, preventive and participatory. It has always meant that you guide the process through participation and meeting your goals, not ours.

Live Younger Private Clinic look at Healthspan. Not Lifespan

Lifespan is How Long You Live.

Health span is how long you live WELL.

This issue we face today with the treatments available with modern medicine, is the gap between health span and life span.

That gap can be months, years or decades. People suffering from disease and disability. Needing care. In pain. Unable to feed or toilet themselves, dress themselves or live independently.

Today, the waiting list for long term care and palliative care grows longer and longer.

What is missing over the last 300 years, is embracing the bio-individuality of each person.

You are your own unique individual. Everything about you is different from another person, even if you are an identical twin.

Lifespan is How Long You Live.

Your biochemistry (based on your exposures, your food, and everything you do); your stress and emotions, your nutrient stores, your brain and body chemistry, your gut microbiome, your liver enzymes… Everything about you is different from any other person.

Precision Medicine

This is the basis of Functional Medicine: a step away from the traditional ‘one size fits all’ approach.

Precision medicine is predictive, preventive and customized.

We are pleased to have brought our clients elements of precision medicine for over 15 years as the science evolves.

Advances in science allow us to:

  • Look at your genetics, beyond risks for certain diseases
  • Epigenetics and your rate of aging. Eg. Horvath clock
  • Examine your microbiome
  • Understand the personalized glycemic response
  • Map your toxic burden
  • Identify and treat chronic inflammation and chronic infections
  • Identify your liver enzyme pathways
  • Advanced cardiac testing to predict heart inflammation, examine blood vessel immune system function and specific markers that predict future cardiac event risk years before symptoms develop
  • Advanced cardiac imaging to find early calcification and stratify risk
  • Advanced lipid (cholesterol) panels to identify particle size and particle number
  • Identify diabetes before it becomes apparent on routine blood testing, even before pre-diabetes

OUR HISTORY

When we started seeing patients 16 years ago, it was to focus on bio-identical hormone therapy. Very soon it became apparent that hormones are only 1 piece of the puzzle to achieving true health and vitality.

Live Younger HISTORY
Our Director of Medical Education, Dr. Shabnam Das Kar, MD beautifully captured our approach to complete care for the first 10 years with this ‘puzzle’ of health. While we were watching the fields of genomics and proteomics, the research and data weren’t quite available at the time to incorporate into our practice.

Health tracking using wearable devices like Fit Bit, blood sugar monitoring and ultimately CBG (continuous blood glucose monitoring) using devices like Dexcom and Freestyle Libre helped us help our patients lose weight and impact their HEALTHSPAN. How well they live. At the start, we embraced 23andme genetic testing until newer, and more accurate testing became available.

From very early on, finding and removing environmental toxins has been a foundational pillar of our programs.
Advanced cardiac testing, and over 50 biomarkers to assess your complete health were the basis of starting an assessment for healthy aging, bio-identical hormone replacement and longevity.

Fast forward to today: science continues to advance.

We can now measure how fast your DNA is aging. We can look at heart disease risk in more comprehensive ways that give a far better understanding of risk. You have less worry of being that ‘fit healthy person who drops dead of a heart attack’. Or of being that person who gets diagnosed with cancer or dementia. We have the tools, the science and the technology to help you live longer, and younger.
