Thinking About Ozempic

If you’ve tried everything and the weight won’t stay off, you are not alone, and you are not broken. And if a GLP-1 drug is starting to look like your only option left, you deserve the full picture before you go down that road.

Because the data just landed, and it’s not what the ads are telling you.

THE GLP-1 REALITY CHECK

A June 2025 article on Medscape confirmed what many of us in functional medicine have been watching in real time:

Weight regain after stopping GLP-1 drugs occurs at a significantly faster rate than with any other weight loss method.

  • 50 to 65% of people stop the drug within the first year
  • Weight returns four times faster than with other methods
  • People reach their original weight 2.4 years sooner than those who lost weight through other approaches.

The drug only works while you take it.

Stop it, and your body races back to where it started, faster than if you’d never taken it at all.

That’s not a side effect. That’s the mechanism because GLP-1 drugs do nothing to fix the reason you couldn’t lose weight in the first place.

That reason is biological. It is measurable. And it is fixable.

WHAT’S ACTUALLY KEEPING YOU STUCK

There are five root causes I see blocking weight loss in my patients every day. None of them appear on a standard blood panel. All of them are easily corrected without a drug.

  1. Insulin Resistance: The Hidden Saboteur Your Doctor Is Probably Missing

This is the starting point. When you have insulin resistance, your body is flooded with insulin, but your cells have stopped responding to it. The result is a body that refuses to burn fat and instead stores everything.

Here is the problem: most standard blood tests will show your insulin as normal. Your doctor sees the number, tells you everything looks fine, and sends you home. It is not fine.

Properly identifying insulin resistance requires measuring insulin, not just glucose or A1C, and interpreting that number in functional ranges rather than standard lab ranges. Insulin has a specific pattern of response. Most conventional physicians are not trained to test this, and even fewer understand the Kraft pattern.

Many environmental pollutants, organochlorines, pesticides, and plastics block insulin receptors and affect glucose transport across cell membranes. They are now called diabetogens.

This is where we start at Live Younger. Book a metabolic assessment and find out what is actually happening. Treat the cause, and the symptom (fat) resolves.

  1. The Metabolic Triad: Cortisol, Insulin, and Thyroid

These three hormones operate as a system. When one is off, the others follow.

Chronically elevated cortisol, the stress hormone, tells your body to store fat and break down muscle. It also directly disrupts insulin signaling, which brings you back to root cause number one. Subclinical hypothyroidism, a thyroid hormone level that sits technically within normal range but functions poorly, slows metabolism and impairs every fat-burning process in the body.

These issues are extraordinarily common in women over 40. They are almost universally missed on standard blood work. And when all three are dysregulated together, even the most disciplined eating plan will fail.

Your metabolism is a hormonal conversation. We need to understand what your hormones are actually saying.

  1. Nutrient Deficiencies: Why Low Calorie Diets Make Things Worse

Fat burning is not a passive process. It requires energy. It requires specific nutrients to power the biochemical reactions that convert stored fat into fuel.

When you cut calories too aggressively, you deplete the very nutrients your body needs to burn fat. This is why so many women feel exhausted, stalled, and frustrated on low calorie diets. You are not eating too much. You may not be eating enough, or you may be missing the specific macro- or micronutrients your metabolism depends on.

We do not promote calorie counting, and we do not recommend fasting or low fat diets. Time and millions of people trying these methods have shown us this fails far more than it works. When it does, the results are not long lasting.

Identifying and correcting these deficiencies is a non-negotiable part of a real metabolic reset.

  1. Inflammation: The Invisible Wall

Chronic low-grade inflammation creates a biochemical environment where fat loss becomes physiologically impaired, not just difficult. It disrupts thyroid function, worsens insulin resistance, and blocks the hormonal signaling required for fat burning.

When inflammation is present, even aggressive dietary approaches like a ketogenic diet fail to produce results. We can measure inflammation, and we can treat it. When we do, the body often begins to respond for the first time in years.

Stop blaming yourself. Start measuring the right things.

While GLP-1 drugs help lower inflammation, solving the underlying cause of inflammation makes much more sense, costs little to nothing, and does not lose you muscle and bone, like the drugs do.

  1. Sleep and Brain Chemistry

You cannot burn fat efficiently without adequate sleep. Poor sleep elevates cortisol, disrupts insulin, and increases hunger hormones. It is not a lifestyle preference. It is an essential component of a healthy metabolism and fat burning.

Neurotransmitter imbalances, particularly in dopamine and serotonin, drive carbohydrate cravings and appetite dysregulation that feel impossible to override. This is not a weakness. This is neurochemistry. When we address it, cravings shift in ways that feel like a genuine release for patients who have fought their appetite for decades.

WHAT A REAL METABOLIC RESET LOOKS LIKE

Our program at Live Younger is built around one goal: finding and fixing the root cause of your weight loss resistance.

That means testing insulin resistance the right way. Balancing cortisol, thyroid, and sex hormones. Identifying nutrient deficiencies and correcting them so your body actually has what it needs to burn fat. Treating inflammation. Addressing sleep and brain chemistry as clinical priorities.

This takes more than a prescription. It requires labs your current doctor has probably never ordered, interpreted in functional ranges by someone trained to act on what they find.

The results last because we address the cause rather than suppress the symptom.

If you are done with approaches that work for three months and then fall apart, this program was designed for you.

YOUR NEXT STEP

You deserve to understand your own metabolism. Not a generic program. Not a drug that requires a lifetime commitment to hold onto its results. Your specific biology, tested properly and treated accordingly.
